Communication of 1 II.2011:

The Telecommunications Authority of Maldives, Male’, announces the following changes to the telecommunication numbering plan of the Maldives, to take effect during 2005. These changes are scheduled to start as specified below, at 0000 hours (UTC +5):

– Change in mobile telephone numbers: 29 April 2005

– Change in fixed telephone numbers: 29 July 2005

– Change in paging numbers: 1 October 2005

– New numbering plan fully effective: 1 December 2005

Under the new numbering plan, all fixed and mobile numbers will change from six (6) to seven (7) digits. The change consists of introducing new number prefixes to the former national subscriber number according to the rules specified below. Special services and emergency numbers will remain unchanged with the existing three (3) digit codes.

After the transition, both the old and new numbers will work in parallel for a definite period: three months for mobile numbers and two months for fixed numbers, after the changeover date. Following this parallel working period, an announcement will guide the callers who dial the old numbers for a period of three months for mobiles and two months for fixed lines. Any calls to the old mobile numbers will not be completed after 31 October 2005, and those to the old fixed numbers after 30 November 2005.
